Coastal Vampire

Hey y’all,

Welcome back the blog. A fun one today: Coastal Vampire! ✨

Coastal Vampire

Let’s talk about our two vibes:

Coastal

Coastal uses lots of sea blues, light/white woven elements (a liiiiiiittle boho, but not too much!), and some ocean/beachy/nautical elements. Coastal can sometimes be a little tricky because it can get mermaidy, or too boat-y, or too tropical, or too ocean-y. It’s sometimes hard to find the right balance, but I usually go for a Nancy Meyers-esque, “Grace and Frankie”, blue-and-neutral based cottage energy. Does that help? Good luck trying to make this happen. 😂

Vampire

Very opposite energy — for vampire, I was seeing your standard dark, Victorian/Gothic, spooky, manor energy. 🌙

So how did I mix them? 🖌️ My solution was a sort of Beetlejuice on the Beach, Sweeney Todd “by the sea”, version of a coastal grandmother cottage. Check out my tips below!

Tips

  • Nautical/coastal vibes love a stripe, usually white and blue. I went black and blue instead to bring the Nightmare Before Christmas energy. Playing with typically “coastal” or “nautical” pieces but giving them a sort of silly, spooky, whimsical twist, a la Tim Burton, blends these two vibe togther. Exhibit B: the skeleton-fish!

  • Use both thick, metal, iron decor pieces for vampire energy, plus light coastal-boho decor pieces. This could look like white washed wood, woven pieces, or even shells, bones and stone (these give both spooky and beachy!)

  • Use beachy grasses or driftwood to give a seaside energy. Anything too planty will swing this vibe too boho/tropical/jungle.

  • With your artwork, look for pieces that are right in the middle of the Venn diagram of seaside and spooky.

  • For your soft goods, try to find pieces that are striped, ornamental or boho (but not too much!).

Colors

Like I mentioned before, just keep your Beetlejuice by the Sea movie in your head when shopping for this aesthetic: mostly black and white, with light neutral pieces, and pops of blues and reds (if you want reds, but mostly blues!).
